How to choose the bachelor / master supervisor correctly?

July 1, 2019

Many university students, along with the difficult task of choosing a bachelor’s or master’s thesis topic, are faced with another challenge, in the form of the choice of the supervisor. At the outset, we consider it appropriate to say that even a supervisor of a bachelor’s or master’s thesis is a human being of flesh and bones who goes to work (university or college), has a daily routine, a family, and usually sleeps at night. His privilege is largely due to the fact that he graduated from college before you do, and has been at the university for some time, and so various academic degrees have been added to him over the years, depending on his professional activity.

It is therefore a person who teaches at a university, and in his work he is engaged in research in a particular field of specialization. Over the years, he has become an expert in his field, writing various articles and publications, and gaining competence to lead students’ master theses.

Each higher education institution regularly publishes on its website topics for bachelor’s and master’s thesis topics from which students can choose.

With regard to the topic of the work, it is good to choose the leader who deals with the issue in the context of his research activities. If you have a custom topic that is not listed in the headings, it is a good idea to find out which of the teachers deal with the issue at your school and reach out to them. If you do not find such a person, it is possible to apply for a job with a specialist from another school, but it is a rather complicated process that involves a lot of pitfalls, and we will deal with it in one of the other articles.

At the moment you found the leader who deals with the topic of your work, there is nothing easier than to address it. Forget about bulk emails like “Hello, I want to ask if you have free capacity to run my DP / BP,” you will increase your chances of a leader many times by describing your motivation to choose a given topic in the first email, the issues you want and at least marginally mention the goals you would like to explore. In this way, the leader will get an overview of what your work should be focused on and be able to consider whether or not you are a suitable candidate for his work.
